Richard and Victoria Tinyes feared the worst when their thirteen year old daughter Kelly Ann vanished from their quiet suburban community of Valley Stream, New York, on March 3, 1999. But the nightmare to come was worse than they could ever imagine. Only five doors away, in the home of John and Elizabeth Golub, police found Kelly Ann's body stuffed in a plastic garbage bag. She'd been brutally beaten, stabbed, strangled, and mutilated. After weeks of intense investigation, police arrested the Golubs twenty-one-year-old son, Robert - a reclusive young man obsessed with bodybuilding and given to fits of rage. The sensational trial and subsequent conviction of Robert Golub shocked the nation and tore the once peaceful community apart. Neighbors took sides. So did the media. And no one who lived on Horton Road would ever be the same.

Against Her Will The Senseless Murder of Kelly Ann Tinyes eBook Ronald Watkins

I read this book as I was traveling from Michigan to Florida and found myself riveted throughout the entire book. The author told this gruesome story in such a way that you feel drawn in from the beginning. The fact that almost from the beginning the cops knew where the crime took place was unusual because neighbors saw this young walk into the Golub house and she never walked out. The description of the house itself and the owners of the house left you feeling disgusted. The Golub's sound like hoarders, but that word was never used. The murderer, Robert Golub, clearly came from a very dysfunctional family. I really enjoyed the author's going into such detail about the investigation, how the police obtained the evidence that convicted this killer, and how many of the police officers put so much effort into nailing the killer. I enjoyed as well the description of how it isn't always pretty behind the scenes while the police investigate a murder. There was a leak coming from the police department and the "leaker' was never identified by the police themselves. You wonder why a police officer would have leaked confidential information to the media about the investigation. I was so intrigued with this story that I googled the murder and found out that Robert Golub "admitted" in 2009 that he took this young woman's life but it turns out he really didn't admit what he did, he said it was an accident. There are apparently many people who believe he had an accomplice but that has never been proven. Lastly the fact that the Golubs and Tinyes still live in the same houses as when the murder occurred in 1989, is mind boggling. The hatred between these two families is understandable because the murderer's father always maintained his son was innocent. I believe the hatred remains to this day. I wonder if any of the police officers are still alive, particularly officer Wells, who almost died of a heart attack from the stress of the investigation. I would recommend this book. It really is a good one if you like to understand how murder investigations are conducted.

Against Her Will The Senseless Murder of Kelly Ann Tinyes eBook Ronald Watkins Reviews

I believe the right person was prosecuted and convicted for the crime, even the families anguish. I can't fathom either family staying in their homes. To stay in a home where a brutal murder occurred that your child has been convicted of I don't understand. Then the parents of the murdered child stay in a home that looks out on the home the murder occurred in. The animosity this created in the neighbourhood had to be unbearable for all. It seems like the parents forgot about the other children, their own and others and how traumatized they would be. The outcome was tragic for all.
Being a true crime book, this was hard one to read. Kelly Ann Tinyes was a 13 year old, looking forward to her 14th birthday. Her father drops her off at home after school and tells her to look after her 11 year old brother. After she receives a phone call that her brother says was John Jay Golub who lives 5 houses up, Kelly leaves and is never seen alive again.

The book takes you through the description of her body when found and how police determined who the murderer was. There is a lot left open like, why was she killed and in such a brutal manner. Did they get the right person? This seemed to be a question throughout as well. The families detest each other and there is a lot of in-fighting during the trial and thereafter. Very sad story.
I gave this book five stars. Very well written and followed the horrible murder against this 13 year old girl. Even though no one really knows why it happened as he did not say, we all feel assured by the evidence and the hard work by the Police, that he was indeed guilty and is the only one that is guilty. The family was devastated as only a family can be, but how sad that the father never really brought himself to thank the Detectives that worked so hard on this case, even to Det. Wells who nearly killed himself stressing and bringing this awful man to justice. I did research on the case after reading and see that the murderer, still in prison, but has the ability to go before a Parol Board every 2 years and the family must show at the Parole hearing to state their case again. Laws need to change. Where does a murderer have more rights than the victims and their families ?
I'm writing about the book itself, but first I have to say the kindle edition was maddening - the paragraph breaks were arbitrary and could happen in the middle of a sentence. There were a full 3 or 4 lines of space between those paragraphs, so each page contained maybe three of these so-called paragraphs. It was very distracting and never stopped bothering me.
The writing was very well done and the story interesting (and sad) but it slowly went from about the murder of the poor little Kelly Ann to the war between the neighbors. It was like the world's longest episode of Fear Thy Neighbor on the ID channel. Or maybe the Hatfield's and McCoy's feud. After it veered off in that direction about 1/3 through the book and never got back to the subject of the book I got more and more frustrated. When I finally gave up, 2/3 through, I didn't like ANY of them on either side. Too bad, it could have been a really good book.
This is one of the better True Crime books I have read. The characters are well depicted so as to remember them throughout the story. Editing is fairly good--a few slight errors. The story itself is compelling. The forensics and court proceedings are easy enough to follow, and, I enjoyed those parts, as well as learned some new things.
This story is absolutely over the top with unbelievable acts of humanity--not only by the perpetrator, but, the families and community, as well. I will definitely keep the author in mind for new reading material. His style reminds me of the late Ann Rule, R.I.P.
